This is a Chosen-karatsu flower vase that developed kiln-change patterns when wood ash adhered to it during firing in a climbing kiln.
Kiln-change refers to the technique of intentionally dropping (or tipping over) the vase into the wood ash while the kiln is being fired, in order to create variations in the glaze.
While this carries the risk of failure, the charm lies in the unintended patterns created by the fire and ash.
Chosen-karatsu ware is glazed with two types of glaze—straw ash glaze and amber glaze—and fired at the highest temperature point within the kiln.
The flower vases from Chosun Karatsu are placed in the most high-risk spot inside the kiln during firing. Right next to where the wood is thrown in.
The design of this vase is a reproduction of an old masterpiece.
After shaping with hand building, it is being pounded using wooden tools.
This vase turned out beautifully.
It will look even more stunning with flowers arranged inside.
10.1cm diameter at widest point, 9cm bottom diameter, 22.5cm height
This vase comes with a wooden box.
